Announcement of The Winners of the Abdel Hameed Foundation Award for Young Arab Researchers for 2010
The Scientific Judging Committee of the Abdel Hameed Shoman Foundation for Young Arab Researchers for the year 2010 has chosen the winners of this Award after the Committee, chaired by H.E. Dr. Adnan Badran, head of the scientific committee of the Award, evaluated the scientific output of the nominees for these awards who number (127) nominees from Arab universities and scientific institutions.
The nominees applied for winning the following awards:
1- Abdel Hameed Shoman Foundation Award for Physics and Geology.
2- Abdel Hameed Shoman Foundation Award for Economics, Banking, and Financial and Management Sciences.
3- Abdel Hameed Shoman Foundation Award for Agricultural Sciences.
4- Abdel Hameed Shoman Foundation Award for Social Sciences (which includes sociology, anthropology and political science).
5- Abdel Hameed Shoman Foundation Award for Medical Sciences.
6- Abdel Hameed Shoman Foundation Award for Engineering Sciences.
The Award Scientific Judging Committee decided to give the Award for the year (2010) as follows:
1- Medical Sciences Award:
The Award will be shared equally between:
a) Dr. Habib Abbas Habib Dakik (Lebanese nationality), professor of internal medicine at the American University of Beirut- Lebanon.
b) Dr. Sharifa Ahmad Hamed Imran (Egyptian nationality), associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Asyut University in Egypt.
Such, for their prolific scientific output in the previous three years, and their published researches which focus on important topics and diseases.
2- Engineering Sciences Award:
This Award is given to Dr. Said Muhammad Saleh Al-Zahrani (Saudi nationality), professor of chemical engineering at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia, for his distinguished scientific research activity which serves national industries, and his obtaining (7) patents some of which are registered in the United States, in addition to receiving a number of scientific awards and medals for services rendered to industry and society in Saudi Arabia.
3- Agricultural Sciences Award:
This Award is given to Dr. Jamil Younis Muhammad Harb (Palestinian nationality), associate professor of physiology at Birzeit University, Palestine, for the excellence of his researches in the field of post-harvest physiology, and his publication of these studies in distinguished scientific journals, and the results (benefits) accruing from them in the field of nutrition and public health.
4- Social Sciences Award:
Given that the Committee noticed that the academic studies submitted by the majority of nominees are based on their doctoral dissertations, many of which lie outside of the time frame considered a condition by the Award, and that a quantitative character is predominant in these studies with a lack of what is remarkable in qualitative terms, and that the output sent does not represent original contributions in the social sciences field, accordingly, the Committee decided to withhold the social sciences award this session.
5- Award for Economics, Banking, and Financial and Management Sciences:
The Award is given to Dr. Dima Muhammad Rashid Al-Jamali, associate professor of management at the American University of Beirut-Lebanon, due to her prolific scientific output published in refereed international journals, which is characterized by both originality and depth of analysis, while focusing on important topics and issues, such as the social responsibility of companies, and woman's issues in the Middle East. Moreover, her studies are methodologically varied and combine theory with application.
6- Physics and Geology Award:
The Award is given to Dr. Ehab Muhammad Naji Obeidat (Jordanian nationality), associate professor of physics at the United Arab Emirates University, for his prolific output in the fields of resources sciences, which has significant technological applications, as well as his contribution to developing the teaching process, and his receiving scientific awards, coupled with his participation in numerous international scientific conferences.
The Foundation congratulates the winners of the Award while wishing them continued scientific achievement and innovation.
