Abdul Hameed Shoman Public library is pleased to present this electronic issuance of the Unified List of Periodicals in Jordan.

Abdul Hameed Shoman Public Library has been persistent since the beginning of 1988 in issuing successive additions of both the Unified List of Arabic Periodicals published in Jordan, and of which four paper prints have been issued, as well as a fifth electronic issue, on a CD-Rom.

In view of the extensive use of the Internet, at various libraries and information centers, and the ease with which researchers could have access to, through an unlimited number of points of access to the Internet, without any geographic or time barriers, in addition to the possibility of updating data day by day, Abdul Hameed Shoman Public Library has seen appropriate to effect maximal utilization of this technique in its issuance of the periodicals. Whereupon, it has been decided to merge the list of Arabic periodicals and the list of foreign periodicals, in one unified list under the title “The Unified List of Periodicals in Jordan”.

Furthermore, it has been decided to make such data available on the Internet, together with a form for updating data, which would enable the participating libraries to use it in updating their data instantly, in order that they shall reflect the contents of such a list as being, in fact, available, at the participating libraries, as well as to enable the researcher to obtain the most up to date information whether on the contents of these libraries in periodicals or, the administrative data pertaining to these libraries.

The significance of issuing this list derives from assisting the researchers in carrying out their works and, to increase cooperation between the libraries in Jordan. It is also beneficial, in avoiding duplication in subscriptions of libraries to these periodicals, thus reducing the financial burden of these libraries

This list contains approximately (12000) printed periodicals, including around (3500) in the Arabic language, and, approximately (8500) periodicals in other languages, mostly in English, available at (89) Jordanian libraries. It is to be hoped that this issuance would motivate the participating libraries in updating their data periodically. It is also to be hoped that it would motivate the non-participating libraries to participate in this list. And, in view of the fact that many libraries have shifted to the method of participating in the electronic prints of the periodicals, instead of participating in the paper prints (hardcopies), whether through the electronic data of periodicals, or direct subscription to such periodicals, this development has been taken into account in this issuance, thereby including the databases in which Jordanian libraries have subscription, as well as the electronic periodicals in which these libraries subscribe directly.
