Milestones

  • 1982: Launch of the Abdul Hameed Shoman Arab Researcher’s Award, to serve as the first Arab award to recognize, encourage, and develop scientific research in a sustainable manner.
  • 1986: Establishment of the Abdul Hameed Shoman Public Library, to serve as the first computerized and fully-equipped public library in Jordan, thus receiving around a quarter million visitors every year.
  • 1999: Establishment of the Abdul Hameed Shoman Scientific Research Fund, as the first program to support scientific research in Jordan, with amounts exceeding JOD 1 million (equivalent to USD 1.5 million).
  • Institutionalization of grants provided by the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation, through the development of the Grants and Support programs, built on dedicated foundations and mechanisms intended to achieve the Foundation’s strategic objectives, within the framework of its following three pillars:
    • Thought Leadership
    • Literature and Arts
    • Innovation
  • 1986: Since the establishment of the Abdul Hameed Shoman Cultural Forum’s activities, it has served as a free platform hosting the most prominent Arab figures of all specialties and disciplines. In this respect, the Forum has become a well-known, cultural hub in Jordan and the rest of the Arab world, given the distinguished lecturers it hosts. It has also issued more than 81 publications on topics presented at its regular seminars and meetings.
  • 1989: Since its inception, the Cinema Program’s activities continued through weekly shows, in which movies are selected by a specialized committee, and then analyzed and discussed with the public, along with the launch of the Film Weeks, featured during three annual events to showcase local, regional and international movies, in partnership with various stakeholders.
  • Establishment of the Knowledge Path interactive library, serving as a free and vital space for children of all ages for meeting, searching and discovering purposes, through the organization of creative and reading activities that seek to stimulate and promote creative thinking by means of several programs and events.
  • Contribution of the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation to the establishment and launch of 17 libraries across Jordan, and another 14 municipal libraries in Palestine.
  • Continuing cooperation with the Ministry of Culture in Jordan to support the Jordanian Family Library project since 2007.
  • Support of the Children's Mobile Library, in collaboration with the Haya Cultural Center since 1998. The Library tours around distant and remote areas in Jordan to provide library services in general, and reading services in particular, especially for individuals who do not have access to libraries in major cities.
  • Development of the trilingual Expanded Thesaurus (Arabic-English-French) in 1993, in cooperation with the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation, Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, and Juma Al Majid Centre for Culture and Heritage in the UAE. In mid-1995, the paper edition of the Thesaurus was issued, and was consequently launched in 2013 as an integrated website; the Maknaz.
