Shoman Public Library
The Abdul Hameed Shoman Public Library was founded in 1986, as the first computerized and fully-equipped public library in Jordan, as part of the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation’s belief in the importance of the role played by public libraries to impact the lives of nations and peoples. In this respect, the Abdul Hameed Shoman Public Library was established in line with the Foundation's vision to promote literature and arts, as well as to provide the public and researchers with various forms of traditional and advanced knowledge sources, along with other dedicated activities and courses, intended to ensure the development of skills, enhancement of creative and educational capabilities, and creation of a cultural space for all segments of society. Furthermore, the Abdul Hameed Shoman Public Library sought to establish the first interactive library for children; the Knowledge Path.
In an effort to expand the Abdul Hameed Shoman Public Library’s activities, the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation established and supported many existing libraries, located across Jordan and Palestine, as well as expanded its partnerships with Arab libraries and cultural institutions, and with the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority and the Juma AI-Majid Center for Culture and Heritage as well in the UAE, so as to create the first trilingual expanded thesaurus, the Maknaz. The Maknaz serves as the main pillar of the information’s objective analysis. Furthermore, the Abdul Hameed Shoman Public Library subscribed to several databases, containing thousands of electronic books on different topics, and facilitated its visitors’ access thereto, through the use of dedicated equipment inside and outside the Library.
As a cultural and social forum, the Abdul Hameed Shoman Public Library holds a Reading Program, during which book publication ceremonies are carried out, as well as hosts reading clubs’ sessions and training workshops and courses, and provides library services. A coffee shop is also featured in the Library to serve its visitors and subscribers.
Given the importance of cooperation and exchange among libraries, the Abdul Hameed Shoman Public Library developed exchange relationships with several libraries and scientific and cultural centers both locally and internationally. Furthermore, the Abdul Hameed Shoman Public Library organizes dedicated courses and workshops, aimed at building and developing the capacities of librarians across the Arab world. The Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation was among the first to launch this type of workshops in the Arab world.
